In the book, the users' "mental model" is all about what the user perceives the design to do, and what the user needs to do to achieve normal functionality of the design. For our project three, we decided to redesign the comment section of YouTube. Normal YouTube users expect to click some share buttons, type some comments, and then go on their merry way after all of their friends see their shared videos and comments.
The implementation model of programmers operates under much more complexity. The programmers have to write a ton of code, and tie functionality of Google+, Twitter, etc. into that codebase. The user clicks things, and those things get watched, or those things get posted. The user's mental model (in regard to YouTube) is a very simple what-how relationship. The programmer's implementation model follows a similar relationship, albeit with a much more complicated "how."
