This last project drilled home one of the most important
aspects of design: embrace the process.
When my group met for the first time we instantly started thinking up
designs for the fridge. After
brainstorming fridge ideas for 20 minutes, we started to design the
persona. The problem soon became that we
were designing our persona around the fridge designs we discussed before hand. The persona would need to have kids because
this feature, or it would need to be a guy because this other one. That’s bad design, or rather, it’s not design. Designers design products around their users,
not users around their products (that’s eugenics). After we realized this we paused, took five,
and came back to the persona without preconceived notions. We were much more successful. When we moved on to the next stage, the
actual design, our ideas were vastly different about what the fridge should
do. We were designing for the persona.

Hi Matt,
ReplyDeleteGood insight on a situation that almost all of us can relate to whether we admit it or not. Sometimes finding the value in the process comes from seeing what goes wrong without it. Even though that"s not the easiest way, it's probably the most unforgettable. Looking forward to seeing your project in its final form.
I can relate to how you designed the persona around the product because that is what i did for the last project and when i was wondering why i didn't get the grade i hoped i realized it was because of that and made sure not to make the same mistake on this project and to really focus on the persona because of how important of a role it plays in design and especially playing the whole game.
