The product I chose last week as being a simple design was twitter.com. The basis behind twitter is connecting with others and expressing ideas with those that follow you. Since my last post on the design of this website, twitter has updated the design which is very similar in the simple design however a few little things changed. The first thing that caught my eye was the name of the homepage in the browser when visiting twitter says "download the free Twitter app" and the biggest thing on the main page is a big cellular phone and the words "take twitter with you." Clearly the main objective for twitter right now is spreading the product through mobile usage which is where most of todays culture is flocking towards. The main purpose for their company right now is socializing. They want to branch out to every single person they possibly can and with the mobile option now available for almost every smartphone, the product spreads very quickly. Most social media websites would have the sign in box as the biggest thing on the page to make it easy for customers to sign in but twitter puts that in a small box near the top right. They realize that the selling point of their product isn't to make it easy for customers to sign in, if the person visits the website they either want to know more about the product or just want to sign in and if they already have an account they would know to go to the sign in box on the top right.

Hi Lee,
ReplyDeleteI think you're starting to get at the "why" behind Twitter--that they believe in "connecting with others and expressing ideas with those that follow you," but what makes their "why" different in that regard from, say, MySpace or some other defunct social site? Good initial thinking; you could definitely strengthen your argument by referencing Chapter 2 or details in the TED talk.
